Agriculture & Forestry in Los Angeles, Ca

Agriculture and forestry are two critical industries in Los Angeles. Though it is one of the largest industrial cities in the U.S., LA was once known as the ‘breadbasket’ for the surrounding area. As industrialization grew, this focus waned and the city is currently 28th in agricultural production, with a gross production value of $278 million in 2005. In terms of forestry, the Angeles National Forest gives local residents a chance to enjoy a wide variety of outside activities.

The online yellow pages directory details the many industry-related businesses in the agricultural and forestry areas at Industry categories include agricultural supplies, forest product dealers, forestry services, and wildlife services, among others.

All of those activities are available to those to visit the aforementioned national park. Fun activities like hunting and trail walking are great for youngsters, most who of whom have grown up with their faces plastered to a television screen. Having a part in giving rise to an appreciation for the beauty of nature in the young is the first step to preserving the environment, as perhaps some will carry forward that feeling into adulthood.

In addition, fishing, in particular is a great way to build patience in the young. It isn’t easy to get a fish to bite on the hook, like one can instantly get ready food at a fast food restaurant. It can take hours of calm, quiet reflection to catch a really good fish that later will adorn the dinner table. Interested parties can find out more about such agricultural and forestry activities in Los Angeles, CA at

Hunting is another agricultural-related skill that park visitors can partake in. Though some have raised objections about animals being killed with guns, in essence it is the same activity as fishing. Besides, millions of cattle are harvested each year to feed the ravenous American diet for hamburgers. A list of agricultural consultants who can provide more information on these topics can be found at

Perhaps the biggest reason to visit the park is the opportunity to camp there. There is nothing quite like going to sleep with a ceiling of green trees and an open sky. With so many oxygen-cleaning plants around, it allows for the delivery of fresh air to lungs that are starving for it. In fact, it is sometimes hard to get back to city life and the serious issues of fog and smog, especially in the Los Angeles area.

Plentiful recreation trails provide another source of enjoyment in nature. If one is lucky, forest dwellers such as foxes, deer and groundhogs can be seen in their natural habitats. Known collectively as wildlife, the many species can be studied through the Los Angeles Wildlife Services, listed at

Two very large industries, timber and logging, also have a connection to the agricultural and forestry fields. Although controversial, to a degree, millions across the nation enjoy the benefits of having cut wood available for a multitude of home-related building projects. If …

Planning the Next Family Vacation With Teenagers

Planning the Next Family Vacation with Teenagers

Vacations are supposed to be many things.  Vacations are supposed to be a great time for the family to enjoy each other’s company.  Vacations are supposed to afford an opportunity for the family to change their pace of living, learn more about what makes life enjoyable, and possibly even to be educational.  At least the parents see it that way.  The children, for the most part, when they are young, just want to eat and play, it does not matter where, it seems.  But, then, they become teenagers.  Teenagers show the independence of mind that you want them to have.  But independence is a double-edged sword.  Now you need to come together as adult minded people and agree on the vacation experience.  It is too late to wish they were little again, and you could be the vacation planning dictator.

Setting all of that philosophy aside, the fact is that planning a vacation, especially when there are children, and most especially if the children are teenagers, is a trying experience, not to be undertaken by the meek.  There is simply no man that I know of, that reaching old age, and reflecting back, would want to re-live the experience.  Maybe if we approach the task as a business person would who was planning a group meeting at work, we could achieve a better result.

Generally, it is true for all people who have to make a decision in a group setting, and live with its consequences, need to meet the two equally important criteria of using methods that are both technically sophisticated and also politically feasible.

Organizing the planning process, with inputs from individual personalities in the hope of forming into an effective team, and being an enjoyable experience, can be a daunting task.  Any small group, whether a family unit or unrelated loose confederation of partners, that decides to go on a vacation, for example, needs to choose a location.  In an all volunteer undertaking each is committing time and money to an effort that is hoped to compensate them greater than would be possible by their individual efforts, hence forming into a team rather than each taking off on their own.

Before the team ever starts out, probably the greatest indication of their probable success is whether they can develop a plan and communicate it effectively to each other, especially the changes that are inevitable.  If they cannot do that, they are unlikely to have much success and they will be less willing to attempt a team effort ever in the future, at least with your participation.  So, the approach to getting the plan set is very important and I will suggest ways to structure that effort and attempt to maintain the good communications.  That way you should have a better chance at success.  At least you and they will not regret joining the team in the first place if you are not successful.  If you are a family unit, of …

Redwood National Park: Three Tips to Effectively Travel to Redwood by Amtrak Train and Bus

Redwood National Park was created in 1968 to protect land adjacent to the California state redwood parks that were formed in the 1920s.  Currently the combined state and federal lands are administered under a joint agreement between the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.  The combined parks cover over 110,000 acres including 37 miles of pristine California coastline.

Since Delta is the only commercial airline into the local airport, it is expensive to fly into the area.  Although not close to an Amtrak train line, there is bus service from Amtrak stations to the Redwood area, which may be the cheapest way to travel to the park.  Here are three tips/hints for effectively traveling to/from Redwood by land:

One:  Martinez, California is your Amtrak connection to Redwood National Park.  The San Joaquin line from Bakersfield (with connecting service from San Diego and Los Angeles) and Oakland (with connecting service from San Francisco) stops there.  Martinez is also on the Capitol Corridor line from San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento (with connecting service from Reno.)  From Martinez, there are two Amtrak Thruway Motorcoaches departing at 10:25 am and 3:25 pm for the six to seven hour ride to the Redwood area.

Two:  Since there is no shuttle service at Redwood National Park, you must rent a car to see the entire park.  Therefore, the McKinleyville stop at the Arcata Airport is the destination for your bus ride.  If you arrive before the rental car counters close in the early evening, you have a choice of companies from which to rent.  If you arrive when the rental car counters are closed, you can take a complementary shuttle bus to your hotel for the night and come back to the airport in the morning to rent your car.  There are a number of hotels in the area that will provide this service.  The motorcoaches back to Martinez leave McKinleyville at 6:15 am and 10:30 am.

Three:  The need to make reservations for the train portion of your trip depends on the service you take.  Although the Capitol Corridor trains are unreserved, the San Joaquins are all-reserved trains.  Although you do not need reservations for the Thruway Motorcoach Connection service, you may be able to receive discounted advance purchase fares or special fares for students and seniors by buying both your train and bus ticket in advance.…

Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City!

Ho Chi Minh City was named after Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese statesman, who served as prime minister and president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). Ho Chi Minh led the North Vietnamese in the Vietnam American War until it ended in 1975. Ho Chi Minh passed away on the 2nd September 1969. Vietnamese unification followed and the former capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in his honor.

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 37 miles (60 kilometers) from the South China Sea and 1,094 miles (1,760 kilometers) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

Over the past decade, Vietnam has been improving its legal infrastructure, banking systems and overall economic and social environment. On January 11, 2007, the country became the 150th member of the World Trade Organization. Today, the local business community is as enthusiastic about the country’s growth and future potential as foreign investors are. In fact, foreign direct investment in Vietnam is expected to reach US $15 billion in 2008, which is more than double from the same period in 2007.

Ho Chi Minh City is the financial hub of Vietnam with over 300,000 businesses in industries such as technology, electronics and construction. It is a fast-paced city that is growing rapidly both in terms of its industry and its population. The city’s vibrant culture and historical ambiance–combined with an optimistic workforce (many of which have no direct memories of the war with America that ended in 1975) –have catapulted the city into one of the fastest growing economies in Asia.

The metropolitan area, which consists of the city center and surrounding towns, is home to more than 9 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in Vietnam and Indochina. Walking through the streets of Ho Chi Minh, one gets a sense of the modern mixed with traditional Asian ambiance.

The local language is Vietnamese but English is spoken almost everywhere. All foreign restaurants have English-speaking staff and most taxi drivers speak a little English. The street and store signs are in Vietnamese. Learning at least a little Vietnamese will make life easier and efforts to do so will be appreciated by the locals.

All foreign visitors are required to get a Visa. A foreigner who comes to live and work in Vietnam usually obtains a visa through his or her sponsoring organization. For a three- or six-month work visa, a passport and an invitation or assignment letter will need to be produced. The passport with a relevant visa is the most important document for a foreigner in Vietnam. It is recommended that all visitors register with their local Consulate or Embassy upon arrival in Ho Chi Minh City.

The local currency is Vietnam dong (VND). The dong comes in notes and coins, which range from 200 to 500,000 VND. It is advisable to take US dollars into Vietnam and exchange it …

Childhood Stress

Stress is defined as the adverse relation of the people to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them (Jone Parry, 2005). Stress occurs when pressure exceeds his or her perceived ability to cope (Centre for stress management, 2004). Stress can also be defined as a process in which when environmental demands strain in organism’s adaptive capacity it results in both psychological as well as biological changes that could place a person at risk for illness (Cohen, 1995).

A very early but exhaustive definition explains stress as ‘Stress is a biological term which refers to the consequences of the failure of a human or animal body to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats to the organism, whether actual or imagined'(Hans Selye, 1956). Today stress levels among children have been going up dangerously due to the pressure of their academic or cultural activities. Not all children can cope with such high levels of expectation and parents do not seem to realize or accept that their children are under severe pressure,” says Elizabeth Vadakkekkara, child psychologist and the director of Thrani (The Hindu, 2003).

Objective:  To study the prevalence of stress in school children, the interrelationship of stress and various areas like school-based competence, their attitude behaviour and their physical and health problems.

This study was carried out in the schools of Trivandrum. Trivandrum being the capital city of Kerala has a cosmopolitan population and could get a cross section of the population of the whole state. A total of 667 students under the age group of 4 -17 were screened using a standardized stress assessment tool. The data collected was analysed statistically to understand the prevalence of stress among children and also to find out the variation in stress based on age, and gender. After screening for stress using a stress scale, 30 school children with above average stress were selected from each age from 4 to 17, giving due representation to boys and girls. Thus a total of 420 children formed the sample for the study. Children selected were grouped age wise into early childhood years (4 to 7+ years), late childhood years (8to11+ years) and adolescence  (12 to 17 years). A set of standardized rating scales were given to children to assess their competence level in the academic field, their attitude and behaviour and also their physical and health problems.

The results indicate that 98.2{bb248b365451375cae95cbd497b3c598d5b16f8829e7d6139daa8093dca7be13} of the children aged 4 to 17 years showed medium to moderate and even severe stress. This suggests that in every age more than 90{bb248b365451375cae95cbd497b3c598d5b16f8829e7d6139daa8093dca7be13} of the school children of the state are facing above normal levels of stress and tension. Many of the psychosomatic problems and suicides commonly seen in our children are found to be the results of this stress.

The study further reveals that the stress rate is high at particular age like 4, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 15, (100{bb248b365451375cae95cbd497b3c598d5b16f8829e7d6139daa8093dca7be13}). Also …

Buying Vineyards For Sale

Many people are looking for more investments as they retire. They would want to do something more than the regular social security pensions. Many people are now looking for more investments that will guarantee them some peace of mind as they retire. They want to be able to get some steady income from their properties as they proceed on retirement. Vineyards are one area that many people are considering. Though unorthodox as far as agriculture is concerned, vineyards are fast becoming the way forward for many investors. The need for wine has contributed to this demand.

Aside potential income, many people are buying vineyards for recreation too. They would like to have a place to retire and have leisure. They would like to settle on their vineyards and be at peace with themselves, they would like to tend to the crops and then go round the farm picking the fruits. Many vineyards have also become tourist attractions. Many people can visit these places for a fee, they would like to learn about how the rapes are cultivated and how they are tuned into wine. Many people are using the vineyards as places for receptions.

Still more some families are using the vineyards to protect their property. The trees will serve as wind breaks and then at the same time be able to check soil erosion. Of late, many people are tying very hard to raise large plantations so they would be able to qualify under the governments land conservation program. In this area, they would leave large tracts of land undeveloped and be able to get as much as 30{bb248b365451375cae95cbd497b3c598d5b16f8829e7d6139daa8093dca7be13} in tax incentives.

Some retirees are looking forward to the vineyards as hobbies. They may have been agriculturists during their active life or just want to have an agricultural business after retirement.

If you wanted to go into winery, California would be the number one destination to buy orchards or cultivate your vineyard. The climate and the topology suits the growth and blossoming of vineyards. Another state you may want to consider is Tennessee.

If you want to buy an existing vineyard, you may want to wait till April before you visit the farm to see how the fruits are blossoming. You should see greenery all round. At this time, you can be able to tell the fruit bearing potential of the trees and judge by yourself if they are something that you will want to buy.

There are two main ways to own vineyards. You can buy an existing vineyard or just start from scratch. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is quite laboring to start from scratch but it also affords you the opportunity to develop your land and bud your vineyards you want. If you buy an existing one, you cannot be sure about so many things. You will not know the agricultural practices that the previous owner has been using. Again, you cannot tell the variety of fruits he may be cultivating. But …
